A successful 2024 in the Hoye Group

The group celebrated a successful year with a traditional early Christmas dinner towards the end of term. This was held in the St. John's College Senior Common Room, which was festively decorated. 

Some highlights from this year include:

1. Fourteen new people to the group in 2024: Four new postdocs (Shiling, Joydip, Woo Hyeon, Hae Jun), two new DPhil students (Ashish and Georgia), five visiting DPhil students (Dongryeol, Jongbeom, Seoyeon, Anil and Ivan) and three Part II students (Jeremy, Kiran, Elita) joined the group. Yixin Wang also transitioned from a Masters student to a DPhil student, and we hosted two undergraduate students from St. John's over the summer (Nat Juntarawatt and Maxime Atkinson)
2. We hosted Prof. Abdou Sekkat through the St. John's College visiting researcher scheme, and hope that this is the first of many exchanges
3. Dr. Ivy Liu became the first student from the group, since we began in Oxford, to pass her DPhil viva. We wish her all the best in her new role in tech investment. We also congratulate Charlie Nicholls, who became the first Part II student to graduate from the group, and is now pursuing his DPhil at the University of Sheffield. Meanwhile, Dr. Yiru Zhu, the final student who worked with us when we were previously based in Cambridge, successfully passed her PhD viva, and has now moved to Penn State University to begin her postdoc. We wish her all the best!
4. Prizes for Dr. Jason Ye (poster prize at Gordon Research Conference), Dr. Woo Hyeon Jeong (poster prize at MATSUS Fall conference, supported by Advanced Optical Materials), and to Prof. Robert Hoye (follow this link).
5. Working together with the Royal Academy of Engineering and St. John's College to deliver a series of outreach activities to encourage more students into STEM. Read more following this link
6. Fourteen papers published this year, with another three papers in press right now. The published papers include research articles in Nature Photonics and Nature Communications, as well as a review in Chemical Society Reviews on perovskite optoelectronics. Both the Nat. Commun. and Chem. Soc. Rev. papers were featured by the editors. Our paper with Prof. Ru Zhou, who visited us last year, on Sb₂S₃ indoor photovoltaics, was published in Light: Science & Applications. Our roadmaps on photovoltaics and perovskite LEDs were also published in Journal of Physics. 
7. Five new projects funded, with another three approved for funding this year, including four new industry collaborations. The projects that started this year are on X-ray detectors (supported through an STFC/RAEng Senior Research Fellowship, and through the ECCS-EPSRC collaborative programme), materials discovery for photovoltaics (supported by First Solar), novel ternary chalcogenide solar absorbers (supported by UKIERI, working with Prof. Aditya Sadhanala in IISc in India), and photovoltaics for electric vehicles (supported by Nissan Motor Corporation). We are also working with 5N Plus for our X-ray detector project. The three upcoming projects are supported by St. John's College, by the SCG - Oxford Centre for Excellence, and by the Royal Society. 
8. Success with tech startup, NanoPrint Innovations Ltd., included among the 21 to watch by cofinitive. Prof. Robert Hoye is CTO of this company, which is commercialising spatial ALD reactors. Two former postdocs from the group, Dr. Dan Price and Dr. Huimin Zhu, are now working for the company as Senior Materials Scientists
