Team
We are an interdisciplinary team, with backgrounds in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering and Physics. Our projects are funded both from research councils (including ERC, UKRI, Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society), as well as from industry. Students and postdocs have won awards for their work, and alumni are now professors, as well as working in industry and in consultancy.
Principal Investigator
Prof. Robert Hoye
Prof. Hoye is a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair. He obtained his PhD at the University of Cambridge, followed by a postdoc at MIT, and research fellowships at Cambridge. He was a Lecturer at Imperial College London from 2020, before moving to Oxford as Associate Professor in 2022. He was promoted to full Professor in 2026. Robert was awarded the 2026 EU-40 Prize from the E-MRS, and has delivered >130 invited talks, alongside invited articles for Nature Reviews Chemistry, Nature Sustainability and others.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Dr. Xiaoyu Guo
Dr. Guo is working on the applications of indoor photovoltaics for edge computing, which is part of the Innovation Knowledge Centre on neurmorphic computing hardware (Neuroware). She completed her DPhil in our group, working on pnictogen-based light harvesters for indoor photovoltaics.
Dr. Jihyun Kim
Dr. Kim is working on developing spin-LEDs from the CISS effect with metal-halide perovskites, as well as BiOI X-ray detectors. For her spin-LED project, she is jointly supervised by Prof. Matt Fuchter, who is in our same Department. Jihyun obtained her PhD in South Korea, and joined our group initially funded through a fellowship.
DPhil Students
Georgia Fields
Georgia is a DPhil student part of the IMAT CDT, and is jointly working between the Hoye Group and Clarke Group. Her focus is on developing inorganic materials for X-ray detection and photovoltaics, spanning from synthesis to structural understanding. She completed her MChem in Oxford Chemistry.
Yixin (Ivy) Wang
Yixin is a DPhil student in the Hoye group working on controlling and understanding the charge-carrier transport properties of AgBiS2 solar absorbers. This includes working on optical pump terahertz probe spectroscopy, and she has experience in first principles calculations. She completed her Bachelors at Imperial College London in Chemistry, before joining our group for a Masters. She switched to DPhil after a year, funded by the Weston scholarship at Merton College.
