BiOI photocathodes

Artificial leaves for solar fuels

We develop a stable all-oxide-based photoelectrochemical tandem devices that can sustainably produce fuels from sunlight and water. Featured in press releases from Imperial, Cambridge, Materials Today and more

Perovskite LEDs

Polarised perovskite LEDs are achieved, with a degree of polarization >70%, by fabricating nanoplatelet superlattices. The strong quantum confinement in the out-of-plane direction leads to large exciton fine-structure splitting, and orienting these nanoplatelets edge-up ensures strong emission from this out-of-plane dipole, which is highly polarized.

Carrier localisation

Ensuring band-like transport is critical for efficient photovoltaic performance, yet carrier localisation has been widespread among perovskite-inspired materials. Here, we study CuSbSe2 to unravel the structural and electronic factors that enable carrier localisation to be avoided, which could enable the design of more efficient solar absorbers.
NaBiS2 solar cells

Ultrathin solar absorbers

We demonstrate NaBiS2 to be capable of absorbing as much light as silicon, but with 10,000 times lower thickness. This is enabled by cation disorder, which also leads to unusual effects on charge-carrier kinetics.

X-ray detectors

We unravel the complex electron-phonon coupling in BiOI, showing single crystals to have long charge-carrier drift lengths. This enables these materials to be capable of detecting ultra-low dose rates of X-rays, which can give rise to safer medical imaging.

Hot carrier cooling

Defect tolerance is a critical enabling factor for the exceptional performance of halide perovskites, but has mainly been considered for band-edge carriers. Here, we use ultrafast spectroscopy to reveal defect tolerance extends to hot carriers, with important implications for making more efficient solar cells. Selected Editor's Highlight

The core limitation of using halide perovskites commercially is their composition of neurotoxic lead that can easily be released into water due to the high solubility of the perovskite compound. This editorial discusses the use of supramolecular complexes to prevent lead leaching from broken perovskite modules.

The ability to tolerate high concentrations of point defects is a key reason behind the rapid rise in performance of lead-halide perovskites photovoltaics. This review examines the complex interplay of factors behind how defect tolerance arises, and how we may find this property in other classes of materials.
