Jason's paper published in Nature Photonics!
Many congratulations to postdoc Dr. Jason Ye, whose work on polarized perovskite LEDs has just been published in Nature Photonics!
This is an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional work led by Jason. In this work, we achieve perovskite nanoplatelet LEDs that directly emit linearly polarized electroluminescence with a degree of polarization (DOP) >70%. This is highly unusual. Although single nanoparticles can achieve a DOP >70%, the DOP reduces to 40-60% at the film level, and <35% at the device level due to increasing randomization in the arrangement of the nanoparticles. We overcame this challenge by forming perovskite nanoplatelet superlattices by kinetically trapping these in the edge-up orientation. The nanoplatelets are strongly-confined in the out-of-plane direction, leading to large exciton fine-structure splitting. By orienting the nanoplatelets edge-up, strong emission from the out-of-plane dipole is achieved, which is highly polarized.
